At Least They Were Shamed into Approving the Aid Package for Ukraine…
It would appear that the stark contrast between the reactions to the attacks against Israel and Ukraine, made that much worse by the fact that Israel’s defensive capabilities already are among the very best in the world, far above their opponents’ offensive capabilities, and they’re also aggressors guilty of a long list of atrocities spanning many decades, while none of these applies to Ukraine, just managed to shame enough thick-skinned Republicans into approving the aid package for Ukraine, alongside the one for Israel. And aid for Taiwan and other US allies in the Indo-Pacific region was also approved, as was humanitarian assistance for civilians in war zones… Though, in this latter case, direct funding for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees was expressly banned, once again highlighting that “the West” doesn’t give a fuck about Palestinians and sides firmly with the aggressor in that conflict, no matter what.
Of course, that aid for Ukraine comes with strings and caveats, about a sixth being in the form of loans, which will become a problem down the road, and much of the rest is actually directed towards the USA and its military-industrial complex, and from what I gather there’s not even a strict requirement for all of the resulting production to then be immediately directed to Ukraine. And that’s on top of the fact that, as always when it comes to countering Russia’s aggression and expansionism, it comes terribly late and may at best make up for some of what was lost just because of the delay and the refusal to take a firmer stance. And, either way, it will almost certainly be weeks, if not months, before this decision will have any real impact on the battlefield, and Russia has been allowed to get in a good position to take advantage of this time, and they’ll certainly go to great lengths to do just that.
So it’s obviously a relief that this finally happened, and it may be enough to ensure that Ukraine won’t lose this war, or at least not in the foreseeable future, but offering them any real chance to win it would have required a firmer commitment, at least on par with what’s displayed for Israel, from the very beginning. And, at this point, it’d most probably require even more than that… And Russia knows all too well, and relies on, the fact that it’s clear that nothing of the sort will happen, no matter what…
