Will Israel’s Audacity Finally Stop Being Rewarded?
I wonder if Macron’s call to halt sales of arms used in Gaza may finally lead to the end of the rewards for Israel’s audacity. Not that the statement has much force, considering that, from what I see, France doesn’t actually send such arms to Israel, but it may mark the beginning of an actual shift in the attitude of “the West”. Then again, the shift should have been made no later than two and a half weeks ago, when the UN adopted the resolution demanding that Israel end its unlawful presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, withdrawing its military forces, immediately ceasing all new settlement activity, evacuating all settlers from the occupied land, dismantling parts of the separation wall constructed inside the occupied West Bank, returning land and other “immovable property”, as well as all assets seized since the occupation began in 1967, and all cultural property and assets taken from Palestinians and Palestinian institutions, allow all Palestinians displaced during the occupation to return to their place of origin, and make reparation for the damage caused by its occupation. But I’m not seeing anything actually happening as a result of that… And nothing actually happened even after Israel declared the UN Secretary-General persona non grata, even though such an act seems to me to be grounds for declaring the state that enacts it a rogue state!
Now I do get the fact that directly fighting terrorist organizations like Hamas and Hezbollah and even terrorist states like Iran when “the West” doesn’t dare to results in quite a lot of leniency and even rewards for actions and methods that would otherwise bring condemnation and sanctions, but there must be limits, and those limits have been crossed at least since 1967, and at least when it comes to Palestine they keep being crossed constantly, in terrible ways and with utter impunity ever since, not just during this past year. And now they’re being crossed in Liban as well. So when will “the West” finally say that enough is enough, and actually take the necessary actions, ending all support for the current Israeli regime, aiding the protesters and opposition to oust it, taking up their role as peacekeepers in the region, enforcing the two-state solution and doing everything else required in order to eventually pave the way to a just peace? And those who say that real peace in the region is nothing more than a dream or fantasy must realize that it hasn’t been attempted so far, the conditions for it haven’t been provided, and while the level of distrust and hatred makes a lasting peace unlikely in the foreseeable future, things will only get worse unless the seeds for it are sown now.
