Spain May Just Make the EU Finally Move Against Israel
It was good news that the European Citizens’ Initiative demanding the full suspension of the EU-Israel Association Agreement recently gained the required number of signatures, but this is usually a long process and the results are uncertain, yet now the chances of things actually moving in that direction more rapidly may just increase a whole lot, because on Tuesday Spain will formally propose the termination of the agreement. And, while such a move coming from Spain isn’t exactly surprising, things seem to be shifting in the EU as a whole, especially now that the regime will change in Hungary and they’ll probably stop blocking proposals to sanction Israel, so the chances of something actually happening are improving.
Of course, however major such a measure would be, it’d still be far too little and far, far too late for so many Palestinians, both in Gaza and in the West Bank, who have been suffering and dying for so long, because of the war but also because of the settlement policy and settler violence, which are problems that have existed long before the war and which Israel continues to pursue with impunity. But now there are more attacks in other regions as well, and while those in power, with few exceptions, have proven time and time again to consider Palestinians less than human and unworthy of attention, not to mention protection, and it’s rather difficult to truly argue against attacking the Iranian regime, there is collateral damage, and then there’s the situation in Lebanon as well. And, while those who don’t care for Palestinians aren’t particularly likely to care that much more for Iranians or Lebanese, it’s all adding up and maybe, just maybe, someday it’ll be enough. And maybe, just maybe, some from those regions will still be alive when that happens…
