Cav's Place

Back in May, I was complaining that eYou had only been launched as an app, not being accessible at all on PCs, which went against what it claimed to aim to be. So the good news is that the situation changed and the web version was launched last month, even if the layout still follows the infuriating current design norms, catering to mobiles regardless of the device it’s actually displayed on and making for a lot of empty space on a monitor. Either way, I only learned of it some two weeks later, but I did actually start using the place once I did.
Things were rather tense at that point, because of the update that followed the launch of the web version, which allowed post authors to delete comments at will. But they actually listened to the complaints and even offered a compromise, asking the community what to do. The problem with that poll was that the options were biased, the votes against deletion splitting between removing it entirely and the suggested compromise, to replace it with hiding, which resulted in a clear win for those who wanted to keep the option to delete. But that option received 44% of the votes, while the total of the two options against deletion was 51%, and they actually took that into account and created another poll, getting rid of the idea of removing any control and asking people whether to keep the option to delete or replace it with hiding. And hiding actually obtained even more than the previous total, winning by 54% to 40%, and they listened, the most recent update replacing deletion with hiding… Though it also gamified things by adding streaks and weekly “quests”, which will admittedly boost engagement but at the cost of quality.
The main feature that’s still bafflingly missing are private messages. I was so sure that there couldn’t possibly be anything that’d call itself a social network without messaging that I thought I was being dumb and somehow couldn’t figure out how to access them, but they really don’t exist, and they’re well aware that they’re requested but say that they only want to implement them when they can do it right and that’s not easy, so there doesn’t seem to be much hope of the feature being introduced quickly. On the other hand, groups are coming soon, so there will be a way for those who care to interact with more people at once to do so. But I don’t really care about that, and even when it does come to implementing something for that purpose, I wonder if they couldn’t find a way to have forums instead of groups.

While I’m at it, I’ll also mention here that I just updated the Who the Heck Is Cavalary? page, to add not just my eYou profile, but also those I have on The StoryGraph and HonestGamers, while removing the mention of Patook, which no longer exists, and leaving less about my presence on OkCupid than I had before, since I haven’t checked the place in so long and see little reason to do so again.
