Making People Do Nothing
Today is Blog Action Day for the environment, which seems to have managed to make me finally start writing this rant I had planned for quite a long time. Ok, so it’ll be posted towards the end of the day, for me at least, but better late than never!
Fact: We have a big problem, pollution, and we’re its cause. And that problem has another, catastrophic, effect: Global warming. Far too many people are using too many resources and releasing too many toxic compounds into the environment.
Fact: A tremendous amount of time and money are spent denying that we are causing these problems, or at least denying that there’s anything we can do about them, and pseudo-science and wrongly understood religion are riding alongside the economics of shortsighted greed in the front line of the campaign.
Why is that? Why are there so many resources poured into making people do nothing? Why do some plan and scheme and spend so much to stop something that would benefit us all in the long run? How can they not see that these problems are even affecting them right now?
A decade or two ago you could say they were only interested in themselves, and since the most drastic changes didn’t look like they’d happen within their own lifetimes they simply didn’t care. But now? They see that some of the very resources that they’re getting rich exploiting are being exhausted. They see that extreme weather is destroying much-needed infrastructure more and more often. They see that they need to spend more and more to protect themselves from the poisons they fill the world with. Yet they still not only do nothing to solve the problem themselves, but actually do everything they can to stop others from doing anything towards solving it as well!
Call me behind the times, but I still don’t even understand how can tomorrow be irrelevant, much less how can both tomorrow and today be treated as if they wouldn’t matter. Are they so blind not to see that they can’t keep this up for much longer? More importantly, are we really stupid enough to let them keep it up?
If they’re so bent on doing it, fine, let them waste their days, nights and fortunes on trying to make us do nothing, but make sure they fail! We are all connected to each other and to the world itself. Stop harming without just cause and start helping for a change! Leave them alone when posible, but if they get in our way… Well, I’ll say that’s “just cause”, wouldn’t you?
