Have some new books to read as of a few days ago. Talking about the A Song of Ice and Fire series. I guess I’ll now see if it’s as good as it’s said to be, though I’m so starved for reading that it’d be quite hard for me not to like a solid epic fantasy series.
The book fair was last week and I went to take a look despite knowing that this shop I found there last year, one that sells books in English and mainly focuses on fantasy titles, wasn’t going to participate in order to protest against the way the fair’s organized. The plan was to go to that shop after leaving the fair and actually buy something from there if I wouldn’t find anything more interesting at the fair, seeing as they announced significant discounts during those days.
That went as planned up to the part about actually buying something. I went in, looked at everything, picked what I wanted but there was no way I could actually buy them. I tried to waste some more time in there, hoping I could persuade myself, but I was just growing more and more afraid so eventually I left, feeling even more like shit than usual…
I told dad what I meant to buy after getting back here and he went to pick them up the next day, so at least I have them… And the 30% discount made them be worth the price too, seeing as they ended up costing about as much as they would have been if I’d have ordered them from Amazon, when books in English sold around here tend to start at around 20% above what they’d cost if ordered like that and sometimes get to be even 50% more expensive.
It does seem a whole lot like The Lord of the Rings, but the author says quite clearly that it was his inspiration, so he never claims to be anything more. That said, it’s pretty darn good.

Original review date lost. Assuming the same as that for the first three Temeraire books, as it seems to have been posted at the same time.
Perhaps the best book of the series? I’m not entirely sure, but I think I’d call it that. Most humans portrayed are still as rotten as ever, because that’s how humans really are, but there are some truly interesting characters in addition to the different dragons and good action parts. The multiple locations also give an added depth to the story, showing what’s going on in different parts of the world.

Note: Original review date lost. His Majesty’s Dragon shows up as added last, on June 22, but review was likely posted between June 11 and 21, so assuming 21 and perhaps changed the selected edition the next day. The other two seem to have been written at about the same time, so likely added them all at once, seeing as books were read before I had any accounts to post these on.
I think this might have been a little worse than the others in the series, even if only because it features more interaction with humans, a traditionalistic society and all the associated filth, but it is nevertheless a necessary part of the entire story, bringing added depth to the dragons, plus some of the few worthy human characters.

Such series tend to start out rather slow, and that’s what this does too, but that doesn’t make you lose interest or focus. It paints the characters and develops the story rather well, and I keep finding myself wishing to just do without all the other annoying humans and focus on the dragons, and perhaps some of the better captains.
