Searching for ET

I have no doubt that we will be successful in our search for extraterrestrial intelligence within the next few decades, but I find myself wondering what will we do afterwards. Wonder if anybody even thought that far, or they’re just split between those who think that we’re alone and those who put every effort into proving we’re not, at the expense of any plans made for the day after they succeed.

Say we find obvious signs of intelligent life on or around an Earth-like planet, or perhaps signs of stranger forms of life from other interesting planets. That planet will most likely be hundreds of light years away from Earth and not only that we won’t be able to reach it, but even attempting to send a message would be pointless, as our best method of doing that is using radio waves and they only travel at the speed of light.
Won’t that be awfully frustrating? Finally having proof that they’re out there and not being able to do anything about it? Just staring at them and wondering if they’re not perhaps staring at us as well, each waiting for the other to become advanced enough to pay a visit, or at least make a call?

But let’s assume that we will discover some means of sending a message across interstellar distances in a reasonable amount of time before finding somebody to send it to. Does anybody know what will we do then? Do we want to make ourselves known in case they aren’t aware of us yet or don’t we? Do we want to risk initiating direct contact with a civilization that we know nothing about? Do we want to risk throwing a civilization that’s not yet ready for proof that they’re not alone into turmoil?
And if we do send that message, who will send it? What will it say? Once we’ll find a way to translate what each other will say, if they ask about us, what will we answer? If we mean to find out about them, what will we ask? And if they can reach us with relative ease, will we invite them over? Or, better yet, will we let their visits to be out in the open or only in perfect secrecy (as, perhaps, some have already happened)? And, when they come in the open at last, how will we greet them? How will we behave around them?
But, perhaps most importantly, once we’ll find one extraterrestrial civilization, will we focus on attempting to contact them or keep looking for others?

I think that the most likely scenario is that we’ll find them and be able to do nothing but stare in their general direction, so I’m asking these things less in order to find out the actual answers and more in order to find out whether or not those who lead the search know what to do once they’ll find ET.
Is there a clear plan or will everybody start shouting their opinion at the top of their lungs and attempt to beat the crap out of anybody who disagrees? Because, let’s face it, violence is the only way humanity at large knows to deal with differences of opinion in.

And at that moment we certainly won’t need yet another reason for violence, since those who firmly believe that we’re alone might act as if suddenly woken up while sleepwalking and UFO enthusiasts might see this as a confirmation of even the craziest of their current suppositions on the issue.
Can you imagine the potential religious wars, as if there aren’t enough already? Can you imagine the potential conspiracy theories and ensuing paranoia? Can you imagine how many would be ready to die to prove the discovery wrong and how many others would be willing to do the same thing to prove that some know more than they tell, or have known about it for a long time already? Can you imagine the chaos and how the balanced people who see it as a normal event and wonder what the next logical step should be will be caught in the middle, attacked by both sides?

Aware of us or not, waiting for us or not, ready for us or not, they’re there, perhaps occasionally even here, and pretty soon we will stumble upon them. The question is: Are we ready for that day? And since the answer is obviously no, the question becomes: How do we make the world at large be ready in due time, when we already have lots of other things we must ready humanity for on short notice?
That’s the worst problem regarding this issue because until humanity at large is ready for such an event, it most likely won’t be revealed to them. Those who might be in the know can’t be trusted to make such a contact public until they can trust everybody else not to turn the world into chaos if they did. And since mistrust breeds mistrust, the situation can only get worse.

I have no answers… Only know that this is an issue we need to solve, and that it seems even harder to do when the vast majority of people aren’t even aware of the needs of Earth, and certainly not willing to do their part in preserving it.
Perhaps the best way would be to have it taken out of our hands. Have a gigantic mothership come out of an artificial wormhole and block out the Sun one day, then wait out the chaos and hope reason and balance will take advantage of the shock felt by the other sides and eventually emerge victorious. I think that would be a true test for us. Not for us as humans, but for us as living beings trying to determine whether or not we’re worthy of being called intelligent.

Google Earth Outreach

Just a quick notice: Google recently launched a new service called Google Earth Outreach. It’s purpose is to increase awareness about global issues by allowing non-profit and public benefit organizations to add images and information about their work to Google Earth maps.
I’m not sure how much is Google doing these things because they truly care and how much it’s just good publicity, but, again, does the why really matter as long as it gets done?

Told You…

Your life is 54% crappy!

Your life is fairly crappy. There are parts that aren’t complete crap, but life could use some serious rotto router.

How crappy is your life?

That seems a little low, but then again it could be a lot worse I guess…

You are 92% Suicidal

I know how you feel, trust me. Believe that things are getting beter. Don’t kill yourself, Trust me: You are great, I know this because I was like you, Maybe I still am, the point is HOLD ON!! Music can help you, the lyrics and stuff. If people don’t see how great you are, then THEY’RE stupid, not you! Love, Karolien

How Suicidal Are You?

So what else is new? And how the heck are things getting better when all they’re getting is worse? Anyway, don’t worry, won’t do it simply because I’m too much of a coward for that… Or maybe also because there’s still that tiny shred of hope left, too little to be of any use, too much to let me say there’s nothing left to lose…

How will I die?

Your Result: You will die from a terminal illness.

My apologies. In the future, there will be more effective medication to help absolve the pain and discomfort. Do not fear pain or hospitals. To endure illness is divine and will reap many rewards in the next life.

You will die in a car accident.

You will die in a nuclear holocaust.

You will be murdered.

You will die while saving someone’s life.

You will die in your sleep.

You will die of boredom.

You will die while having sex.

How will I die?

All the nice options in the 2nd half of the list, typical… And if that’s so “divine”, why don’t you rush to do it instead, eh?

You Feel Like You Don’t Fit In 72% Of The Time

You often find life a challenge. Things that seem to come easy to others are trying for you. You haven’t found your place yet and probably, on your bad days, wonder if you will. Do not lose hope, though. The world was not made for you, or so you may think. But you can still make a piece of it your own.

Do You Have a Place in This World?

This seems pretty accurate, don’t you agree? It could actually even be a bit higher perhaps… But that hope is long past the moment when it could still be useful, now all that’s left is that tiny bit that just keeps you from saying you have nothing left to lose…

How violent are you?

Your Result: Edgy

If you are provoked enough you’ll do something about it. In a bad situation you have a small chance of kicking ass. For the most part you keep it real.

Risque

Chilled out

Antisocial

Ice Cold Killer

How violent are you?

Once again, seems quite accurate…

You are 26% evil!

You’re almost no evil at all, you are mostly good, but it CAN leak out some evil out of you. But only if someone who is evil has filled your mind with hate, you think about using your evil side against him.

How evil are you?

I certainly hope so, regarding both parts of the assessment. After all, you can’t defeat evil by being good, that only happens in movies and stories.

You are 72% addicted to the internet.

You are seriously addicted to the internet. Perhaps you should consider therapy…. yes Internet Addicts anonymous, we meet in a chat room every Friday night… see you there!

Are you addicted to the Internet?

Funny, but seems about right. After all, all that’s left of my life is on-line… Interesting how the percentages of being addicted to the Internet and not fitting in this world are the same.

I actually have one more like this to post, told you I was bored that day, but I’ll leave it for another time when I’ll need a “filler”.

Green Lists

Anybody else starting to be at least a little amused by these lists? Not that I’m not guilty of making one myself (last paragraph there)…
Honestly, how many people with access to information don’t already know what they should be doing? The issue is making them want to do it, and making governments and businesses support such programs!
The only ones who might still need to be informed are those with little or no access to information, and the only way to do that is sending people there to talk to them.

These lists could still be useful only if they were really specific, giving exact instructions about how to do this or that yourself and telling of products to buy. This can of course be exploited by companies looking to advertise, so a decent such list should include several competing products for each category, letting the consumer make up their own mind but telling them specifically what the options are, not just the general idea.

There are some sites out there, like Responsible Shopper, SVTC, EPEAT or Greendeavor, that try to help people make informed, environmentally friendly purchases.
That’s very good news, but I think they need way more people to know about them and certainly way more people that will help them, so they’ll manage to review as many products and companies as possible. That would certainly be a good start…

Maybe those who mean to fill some space with yet another green list should think about these things and replace it with a more detailed report or maybe an article about one of those organizations that work towards such reports. Just a thought, of course.

You Are 60% Genius!

You scored fairly well, but there is room for improvement. It doesn’t seem that you are a genius, I’m afraid. Better luck next time.

The Genius Quiz

Darn, those questions are hard. Didn’t use any aids of course, wouldn’t be much of a test if I’d go searching for the answers while taking it now, would it?

You paid attention during 69% of high school!

68-84% Pretty good, you know that there are libraries and newspapers, and you remember what you’ve read. You were a child that wasn’t left behind!

Do you deserve your high school diploma?

Don’t have one, but there it is… Wonder what I got wrong, since it was almost a third of them.
